Wisconsin's State Trunk Highway system, consisting of
approximately 11,800 miles of roads, is aging and deteriorating at
the same time traffic congestion is increasing.
In response to this
critical issue, WisDOT, in partnership with its stakeholders,
developed the State Highway Plan 2020, a 21-year strategic plan
which considers the highway system's current condition, analyzes
future uses, assesses financial constraints and outlines strategies
to address Wisconsin's preservation, traffic movement, and safety
Since the release of the State Highway Plan 2020, WisDOT
completed a multimodal, long-range transportation plan called
Connections 2030. This plan
addresses all forms of transportation over a 20-year planning
horizon: highways, local roads, air, water, rail, bicycle,
pedestrian and transit. WisDOT officially adopted
Connections 2030 in October 2009.
