US 10/WIS 441 expansion study

Note: November 18, 2009 – Second PIM for renewed expansion study is scheduled from 5 – 7 p.m. at the city of Menasha Public Library (lower level, Company E room) located at 440 1st Street, Menasha.

Study overview

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) completed a long-range study looking at the expansion of US 10/WIS 441 in 2004. The study limits extended for six miles along US 10/WIS 441 from one half mile west of County CB to one half mile east of Oneida Street. Although it was not part of the main corridor, the 3-mile section of US 41 from the County II (Winchester Road) interchange to the County BB (Prospect Avenue) interchange was also included in the study.

The long-range study included evaluating of the impacts of expanding US 10/WIS 441 from four to six lanes and upgrading interchanges between County CB and Oneida Street. The construction of a second parallel bridge across Little Lake Butte Des Morts was also included in the study.

Improvements investigated

Based on a safety study of US 10/WIS 441 that was completed in 2007, additional short-term and long-term improvements along the corridor are now being investigated.

Short-term improvements along US 10/WIS 441 that are currently scheduled for construction in 2010/11 include:

  • Auxiliary lanes along both sides of US 10/WIS 441 between County P and County AP.
  • Improvements to the US 10/WIS 441 westbound on-ramp at County P interchange.
  • Flattening of some steep slopes within the County P interchange.
  • Improvements to overhead signing.
  • Upgrading of impact attenuators at some sign bridges.

Long-term improvements that are currently being investigated as part of the renewed study include:

  • The flattening the sharp horizontal curves along US 10/WIS 441 between County P and County AP.
  • The possibility of using roundabouts rather than signalized intersections within the County P, County AP, WIS 47, and Oneida Street interchanges.

The US 10/WIS 441 expansion study is being conducted under the Major Highway Development Subprogram. The goal of the renewed study is to complete the updating of the environmental document by Spring 2010 thereby allowing the project to be considered for future funding by the legislative Transportation Projects Commission (TPC), which typically meets in even numbered years.
