WisDOT: Improvements announced for Highway 69, Dane County

February 14, 2014

Resurfacing advanced to fall 2014

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation Southwest Region has advanced the resurfacing of Highway 69 in Dane County to the fall of 2014. Work will occur between County D in Belleville and Valley Road, south of the US 151 interchange near Verona.

The highway, which was experiencing degradation prior to the winter and was originally scheduled for resurfacing in 2016, has rapidly deteriorated due to the severe weather.

The estimated $2-3 million resurfacing project planned for the fall is designed to help alleviate some of the winter pavement displacement occurring at the location. Currently moisture is freezing in the soil beneath the roadway, causing an upward expansion resulting in the pavement heaving or tenting. In most cases, the pavement settles once the weather warms up in the spring.

Resurfacing will reduce the amount of moisture reaching the sub-soils in the future. Options for repairs at this time are limited.

Resurfacing partially addresses the issues associated with this segment of Highway 69. The pre-existing condition of the road will limit the life of the work performed this fall. A full reconstruction of the highway is planned for 2019.

The Southwest Region will continue to monitor conditions on WIS 69 and all highways in the region and pursue the most effective means possible to improve conditions where needed.
