Northwest Region weekly construction update

August 15, 2014

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) is providing a weekly update on construction projects in the Northwest Region, which includes the counties of Ashland, Barron, Bayfield, Buffalo, Burnett, Chippewa, Clark, Douglas, Dunn, Eau Claire, Jackson, Pepin, Pierce, Polk, Rusk, Sawyer, St. Croix, Taylor, Trempealeau and Washburn counties.

Construction related traffic impacts are subject to change and dependent on favorable weather patterns.

Ashland County

WIS 77
Location: Clam Lake to WIS 13
Schedule: July 17 to September 22, 2014
Cost: $3.3 million
Description: Resurface project
Traffic impact: WIS 77 will have single lane closures at various locations within the project limits. Crews will direct traffic using stop and go signs.

WIS 13 (Ellis Avenue)
Location: 6th Street to US 2
Schedule: August 4 to September 12, 2014
Description: Resurfacing and intersection improvements
Traffic impact: Both northbound lanes are closed. There will be bidirectional traffic between US 2 and 6th Street while the northbound lanes are closed. Crews will be directing traffic using stop and go signs at intersections. A 4-way stop has been created at the intersection of Main Street/WIS 13 and 6th Street/WIS 13. Lane widths are 11.8 feet. A truck detour is being used, through August 22, from the 6th Street/WIS 13(Ellis Avenue) intersection to WIS 137(6th Street west), to WIS 112(Sanborn Avenue), to US 2, to the US 2/WIS 13 (Ellis Avenue) intersection.

Barron County

No state construction projects currently in progress.

Bayfield County

No state construction projects currently in progress.

Burnett County

No state construction projects currently in progress.

Chippewa County

No state construction projects currently in progress.

Clark County

No state construction projects currently in progress.

Douglas County

US 2
Location: US 53 interchange to County D (Superior to Brule)
Schedule: March 4 to November 15, 2014
Cost: $11.1 million
Description: Rehabilitation
Traffic impact: US 2 will remain open to two-way traffic throughout the project.

WIS 27
Location: Rush Lake Road to County B (Hayward to Brule) 
Schedule: July 2 to September 19, 2014
Cost: $2.0 million
Description: Pavement replacement
Traffic impact: WIS 27 is open to local traffic only from Rush Lake Road to County B. The roadway may be closed during pipe installation, but may open at the end of the day. The detour route begins at the intersection of WIS 27 and  Bayfield County N and continues eastward six miles to County A. Proceed north on County A for 15 miles to the intersection of US 2 (Iron River) then drive seven miles west on US 2 to Brule.

US 2
Location: Superior – Bong Bridge and approaches
Schedule: April 7 to November 1, 2014
Cost: $18.2 million
Description: Bridge maintenance, reconstruct Wisconsin approaches (roundabout), local street work.
Traffic impact: Eastbound US 2 traffic reduced to one lane on the bridge. Westbound lanes are closed and a detour is in place using Blatnik Bridge.

US 53
Location: County Y (Gordon) to County M (northbound) and County M to Business 53, Solon Springs (southbound)
Schedule: May 5 to August 29, 2014
Cost: $4.8 million
Description: Pavement replacement, intersection improvements
Traffic impact: US 53 traffic reduced to one lane in each direction.

Dunn County

I-94
Location: Menomonie to Eau Claire (Eastbound Red Cedar Bridge)
Schedule: March 10 to November 12, 2014
Cost: $6.0 million
Description: Reconstructing new bridges over the Red Cedar River. Old westbound structure will be removed during construction season.
Traffic impact: A single lane closure is scheduled for August 20, 1 to 7 a.m.

WIS 25
Location: WIS 64 to north Dunn County line
Schedule: May 5 to August 15, 2014
Cost: $2.7 million
Description: Resurfacing
Traffic impact: Project complete.

Eau Claire

I-94
Location: WIS 37 to US 53 (Eau Claire to Osseo)
Schedule: March 17 to October 31, 2014
Cost: $25.3 million
Description: Pavement replacement
Traffic impact: I-94 ramps and WIS 37 are open to traffic. I-94 eastbound and westbound will have two lanes of traffic in each direction.

I-94
Location: US 53 to Mallard Road (Eau Claire to Osseo)
Schedule: June 2 to October 1, 2014
Cost: $6.6 million
Description: Pavement replacement
Traffic impact: I-94 east and westbound will have single lane closures Aug 18 to 23 during the overnight hours.

US 53
Location: Northbound US 53 Eau Claire River Bridge
Schedule: August 11 to August 29, 2014
Cost: $224,500
Description: Polymer deck overlay
Traffic impact: Northbound US 53 will have an on-ramp closure at the River Prairie Drive Interchange and nighttime single lane closures, 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Jackson County

I-94
Location: WIS 95 to County F (Osseo to Black River Falls) 
Schedule: September 9, 2013 to November 15, 2014
Cost: $21.6 million
Description: Pavement replacement, grading, beam guard installation 
Traffic impact: I-94 eastbound and westbound will be open until September 2.

Pepin County

No state construction projects currently in progress.

Pierce County

US 10
Location: Ellsworth to Durand, US 63 to County A
Schedule: June 9 to September 15, 2014
Cost: $4.6 million
Description: Pavement replacement
Traffic impact: US 10 will have daytime lane closures through mid-September.

Polk County

US 8/WIS 46 Intersection
Location: Amery
Schedule: June 30 to October 24, 2014
Cost: $1.7 million
Description: Single lane roundabout installation
Traffic impact: Traffic will be routed to a temporary road controlled by temporary traffic signals around the south side of the intersection.

Rusk County

WIS 27/US 8
Location: Ladysmith to WIS 27 (Miner Avenue to Flambeau Avenue) and US 8 (11th Street North to 8th Street North) 
Schedule: August 18 to late September 2014
Cost: $777,463
Description: Widening the intersection of US 8/WIS 27, resurfacing
Traffic impact: Crews will be directing traffic through the work zone with stop and go signs. The intersection of US 8/WIS 26 will be milled and paved overnight between 7 p.m. and 5 a.m.

St. Croix County

WIS 64
Location: Stillwater to Somerset, St. Croix River to County E 
Schedule: March 10 to November 14, 2014
Cost: $4.7 million
Description: Clearing and bridge work.
Traffic impact: WIS 35 is open to traffic.

WIS 35
Location: River Falls to Hudson, Radio Road Interchange
Schedule: May 6, 2013 to August 15, 2014
Cost: $10.8 million
Description: Construction of a new interchange
Traffic impact: Project complete.

Sawyer County

No state construction projects currently in progress.

Taylor County

WIS 64
Location
: Coyote Drive to Central Avenue (Medford)
Schedule: August 18 to October 28, 2014
Cost: $4.6 million
Description: Resurfacing and bridge maintenance
Traffic impact: Billings Avenue will be closed for 5 days beginning August 18. Daytime, single lane closures will be used through the majority of the project. Crews may periodically direct traffic using stop and go signs.

Trempealeau County

I-94
Location: County NN (approximately one mile west of Osseo) to the east Trempealeau County line
Schedule: April 28 to: To be determined
Cost: $4.0 million
Description: Concrete repair and replacement
Traffic impact: No lane closures scheduled.

WIS 93
Location: Independence
Schedule: April 2 to November 26, 2014
Cost: $6.1 million
Description: Roadway revitalization, bridge replacement
Traffic impact: WIS 93 is closed between A Street and WIS 121. Traffic will be detoured via WIS 95 to US 53 to WIS 121. The roadway between Adams Street/County Q (North) and Elm Street, including the bridge, is open to local traffic only. Traffic should expect delays due to lane closures.

US 53
Location: Galesville to Blair
Schedule: April 28 to October 30, 2014
Cost: $8.5 million
Description: Roadway revitalization, two bridge replacements, intersection improvement
Traffic impact: Crews will be directing traffic through the work zone with stop and go signs. Traffic will utilize the detour through September 1 using County TTT and County T.

Washburn County

No state construction projects currently in progress.

Various Counties

Various Highways
Location: St. Croix, Clark, Eau Claire, Chippewa, St. Croix, Jackson, Pierce, Taylor, and Washburn counties
Schedule: May 21 to October 31, 2014
Cost: $460,000
Description: Pavement marking
Traffic impact: Single lane closures

US 53, US 8, WIS 35, WIS 27, County D
Location: Barron, Douglas, Polk, Washburn, and Sawyer counties
Schedule: June 23 to August 15, 2014
Cost: $238,845
Description: Bridge deck sealing
Traffic impact: Project complete.
