July 7, 2008
Governor Jim Doyle has approved $655,000 for two projects at the Manitowoc County Airport. One project, for $50,000 will design the realignment of the existing security fence. The other project, for $605,000, will reconstruct a taxiway. The Governor's action releases $55,125 in state funds for the two projects, and Manitowoc County is contributing another $25,125. The Federal Aviation Administration is providing $574,750.
According to Kim Kaarto, airport engineering specialist with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, the improvement projects will prevent intrusions and reconstruct the last portion of Taxiway B at the airport.
The projects are expected to be completed by the end of September 2008.
Manitowoc County Airport's primary runway and 3,341-foot crosswind runway accommodate some 60 aircraft and approximately 32,000 take-offs and landings each year. Three industrial parks are located within a 10-mile radius of the airport and some 60 businesses routinely utilize the airport's facilities.
