Milwaukee high school students prepare for aviation internships

July 7, 2008

Thirty-five Milwaukee high school students have their sights set on becoming "aces" during this summer's Aviation Careers and Education (ACE) program that provides disadvantaged youths with valuable work experience and first-hand knowledge about aviation careers. The seven-week program began on June 23, at Milwaukee County's General Mitchell International Airport.

"Partnerships like ACE provide students with real-world experience that can prepare them for any future career path they choose to follow," said WisDOT Deputy Secretary Ruben Anthony, Jr. "But no matter what career paths these youths ultimately take, ACE will help provide the confidence and experience they need to succeed."

Since 1989, ACE has brought together Milwaukee Public Schools and private employers to provide high school students meaningful work experience in aviation-related jobs. During the summer internships, student work includes aircraft maintenance, baggage handling, ticketing and administrative duties - all under the supervision and guidance of seasoned employees. In the past, some ACE graduates have been able to turn their summer internship into a permanent job with their aviation-related employer.

Milwaukee ACE students come from several high schools including Bradley Tech, Marshall, Messmer, Milwaukee Spectrum, North Division, Pulaski and Vincent.

Employers participating in the Milwaukee ACE program this year include: Air-Tran Airlines, Evergreen, the federal Transportation Security Administration, Midwest Airlines, Milwaukee County's General Mitchell International Airport, Paradies Gift Shop, Signature Flight Support, the 128th Wisconsin Air National Guard and US Air.

"I want to commend all the employers, Milwaukee Public Schools, Milwaukee County, General Mitchell International Airport, and all the local, state and federal officials that help make ACE possible," Anthony said.
