Sturgeon Bay Bridge Canal re-opening today!

May 21, 2008

Canal should be open by 1 p.m.

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) NE Regional Office at Green Bay is announcing some very good news for boaters wishing to use the Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal over the Memorial Day holiday. One leaf of the new Maple-to-Oregon bridge in Sturgeon Bay is planned to open by 1 p.m. today. The west span will be opened, while the east span remains closed.

Both bascule spans were closed on April 28 in order to expedite construction of the bridge, thus closing the ship canal to vessels needing a lift span open to navigate it. The work was originally scheduled for completion May 30.

WisDOT urges all mariners to traverse the construction area with extreme caution. Additionally, up to three work barges may be in the vicinity of the ship channel. During the evening, they will be moored to adjacent bridge abutments and lighted accordingly.
