Motor vehicles are the dominant form of travel in Wisconsin:

• As of January 2010, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) registered nearly 5.5 million vehicles in the state.
• As of January 2010, there were almost 4.1 million licensed drivers in Wisconsin.
• Wisconsin has 11,800 miles of state and Interstate highways; 103,000 miles of county highways, town roads and municipal streets; and about 13,700 state and local bridges.

The WisDOT is also a major advocate for safety. In 2011, 569 people lost their lives in highway crashes. The department is working to reduce fatalities with programs to increase seat belt use, reduce impaired driving, and educate motorists of all ages.
